SPAIN. To a law restricting abortion strongly

The conservative Spanish government adopted Friday, December 20 , a bill severely limiting abortion and returning to a similar system in 1985 , despite the opposition of feminists and left .

This future law, which should be approved in parliament, where the Popular Party has an absolute majority , cancels a socialist law of the former government in 2010 that allowed abortion up to 14 weeks to 22 weeks in case of malformation of the fetus.

It establishes " two conditions to permit abortion : first, that it is necessary due to a serious danger to the life or physical or mental health of the woman , and second , whether the pregnancy is a consequence a crime against liberty or sexual integrity of women , "said the Minister of Justice , Alberto Ruiz -Gallardón , after the Council of Ministers .

Apart from these conditions, it will not be possible to have an abortion , according to the text which also requires parental consent for minors.

" Go back 30 years "

The right-wing government therefore returns , broadly , to the 1985 Act , even if no longer abortion a crime punishable by imprisonment .

Campaign promise in 2011 the Conservative leader Mariano Rajoy Spanish but delayed since the bill has already been denounced by feminists and the left denouncing a "roll back 30 years."

Several MPs have left and on Tuesday signed a "pact for the right to abortion " from a group of 200 women's associations, calling on MPs to join PP .

Abortions abroad

The president of the Planned Parenthood Federation , Luis Enrique Sanchez, he said that the future law could mean " a return back to the situation of 1980 , with Spanish women who go to France or England " to abort when they can afford .

Almost all European countries allow abortion . A total of 118,359 abortions were recorded in Spain in 2011 , after 113,031 in 2010.

According to a study published in May Metroscopia in the newspaper " El Pais " , considered left Institute , 46% of Spaniards are in favor of maintaining the law in 2010 against 41% in favor of restricting abortion.
